Hué

Posted Tue, 23 Oct 2012 21:19:22 GMT Traveling Vietnam

Hué is the old capital of Vietnam (in the time of the old kings). It has many temples, pagodas and a citadelle. I had a really nice Couchsurfing host, Cong, who let me stay at his place for 4 nights and showed me around a lot of nice and interesting places in Hué.

  • Thien Mu pagoda

  • Thanh Toan Tile

A friend of Cong, Na, showed me her parents village. It was an unique experience, I learned how to cook traditional vietnamese food and how it is to live without any electricity. Originally I wanted to stay in that village over night, but sadly at around 8 o'clock in the evening, a representant of the government asked me to go back to the city as I'm not allowed to stay in that village. So we drove back to the city by motorbike, on the way back we had to cross a very dangerous bridge (main raids in the night) for the sake of my own safety. I guess some countries have even stranger laws than Germany :)

Can Tho

Can Tho is located in the Mekong delta in south Vietnam. I came there by bus and had a very nice time in the city being shown around by my Couchsurfer, Ngoc. Sadly I had to stay at a guest house due to rules which forbid girls to host male guests.

  • Floating market

  • A very nice dish cooked by Ngoc: Ricepaper filled with tofu, vegetables and rice noodles

We did a Mekong river boat trip with a visit to a local rice noodle factory. They grind rice, cook it and form rice paper. This rice paper is dried outside in the sun and then cut into rice noodles.

Cambodia

Cambodia seems a lot emptier than Lao. There's a lot culture and heritage sites, but in between there's not much to see (compared to Lao). Still it's incredible how friendly the Khmer people are if you know about their history, especially the Khmer Rouge.

  • Some monkeys in Ankor

  • View from the palace in Ankor Thom

Ankor is totally worth a visit, it's the temples of Indiana Jones and Serious Sam in real life!

The food in cambodia is very tasty, my favorite cambodian dishes are tofu Laab and Khao Lam.
